Create a Legacy through Planning Giving

The Saskatoon Zoo Foundation's new Planned Giving program makes it easier for friends of the Zoo to leave a lasting legacy. The Foundation welcomes many types of planned gifts, including bequests by will, gifts of life insurance, property and securities, and more.

Use your planned gift to support one of the Foundation's four endowments:

  • Environmental Education
  • Conservation
  • Capital Projects
  • Horticulture/Heritage

Or designate the gift to reflect your personal values.

"Planned Giving" says it all!

The term "planned giving" says a lot. A planned gift is a charitable donation that you plan for today, but leave in the future. The planning aspect allows you to leave a larger legacy, while opening the door to significant potential tax benefits.

Planned giving:

  • reflects your personal values and choices
  • gives donors a say in how their gift is used
  • creates an opportunity for family members to build on your legacy
  • maximizes the value of the gift to the charity
  • can reduce the tax burden on your estate

Types of Planned Gifts

The Saskatoon Zoo Foundation welcomes many types of planned gifts. Here are some of the most common:

  • Bequest by Will – allows you to maintain control over your estate and designate who you want to benefit from assets you have accumulated through your lifetime.
  • Gift of Life Insurance Policy – by designating the Zoo Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy (new or existing), you can leave a significant future gift while making regular, tax-deductible monthly premiums.
  • Gift of Property – making a gift of real estate or other tangible assets in your will is another way of leaving a future gift.
  • Gift of Securities – as of May 2006, donors are exempt from any capital gains tax on a charitable gift of publicly traded stocks or securities.
  • Charitable Gift Annuity – by purchasing a charitable gift annuity, you can designate a guaranteed income for life for yourself or a beneficiary such as the Zoo Foundation.
  • Charitable Remainder Trusts – by transferring cash or other assets into a charitable remainder trust you can designate a fixed payment or interest income. Following your death, the remainder of the trust assets go to the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation.

Endowments: Gifts that last a lifetime.

What is an endowment?

An endowment is a gift that lasts forever for a specific area of interest in the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo. Endowments provide interest income that can be used for specific purposes. Saskatoon Zoo foundation endowments:

  • Environmental education
  • Conservation
  • Capital improvements
  • Environmental education
  • Horticulture/heritage

The Saskatoon Zoo Foundation has a goal to generate $1,000,000. Only the interest generated will be used to fund projects in any of the four categories. The advantage of endowments is that the Zoo Foundation will have an annual income that can be used to fund projects and to leverage other sources of money from donors and governments. These funds can then be used for specific projects at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo.

Who can contribute?

  • Businesses
  • Individuals
  • Foundations
  • Government
  • Anyone who has an interest in supporting one or several categories
  • Anyone who would like to make a donation in one or more of the categories in memory of a loved one, friend or family

Naming an endowment.

For a minimum sum of $10,000, an individual/business can establish an endowment in a name of their choosing. Gifts paid over time will be recognized in full value at the time the written commitment was completed
